Tips

No cost/Low cost options
Always turn off the lights when you leave a room, and adjust your curtains or blinds to let in as much light as possible during the day.

As conventional light bulbs wear out, replace them with low energy light bulbs. These will use around a quarter of the electricity and last up to 12 times longer than conventional light bulbs. Low energy light bulbs cost around £5.00 and could save you around £10.00 per year.

Fitting energy efficient lighting - as opposed to the traditional 60 or 100 watt light bulb - can have a major impact.

If every UK household installed three compact fluorescent light bulbs, enough energy would be saved in a year to supply all street lighting. In most homes, lighting accounts for around 10-15 per cent of an electricity bill.

Energy saving bulbs work in the same way as fluorescent lights. An electric current passes through gas in a tube, making the tube's coating glow brightly.

Traditional bulbs waste a lot of their energy by turning it into heat. Every energy saving light bulb can substantially reduce your annual electricity bill. They also last, on average up to 12 times longer than ordinary light bulbs
